Exploring Porcelain and Surface Design
Dates: April 1-May 27
Day and Time: Tuesdays, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
Course Description: Learn skills to work with the quirks of porcelain. Wheel thrown, handbuilt and sculptural work will be a focus of this class as well as surface design. Porcelain takes glaze beautifully and creates an ideal background surface. Autumn will demonstrate her unique method of mixing and using colored slips for surface design decoration. Students new to porcelain can explore by making simple bowl or mug forms using either handbuilt or thrown techniques. Then they’ll learn how to approach surface design on a form. Class may work on projects that incorporate more sculptural work like garden markers, bird sculptures, house numbers or a bird feeder, while learning how to incorporate surface decorating techniques and glazing into the work. This class is intended for students with some experience with clay, but beginners are also welcome! -
