Teapot with Birds
This lovely one-of-a-kind porcelain teapot is perfect for having a nice cup of tea with a friend or a big pot of tea for yourself. It has a beautiful bamboo handle and a built-in strainer so you can make loose leaf or bagged tea.
This is an extra special teapot because it is a kind of collaboration with my late grandfather. A few years ago I was given several teapot handles made by my late grandfather Raymond Grimm. He was known for his beautiful teapots with handles that he made from Grape Vines and Bamboo. I was so happy to get these beautiful handles to use. i made a lovely teapot as a gift for my grandmother using one of the grape handles and a teapot made in the shape of one of my grandfather’s. since then I’ve been so hesitant to use them, waiting for just the right project. about a week ago i was visiting my grandmother and we talked about these teapot handles. She told me that they were made to be used! I don’t need to save them for gifts for family members. My grandfather would have liked to see them on my work. So i went home and did it! and i love it. I have a few more of his handles so I can collaborate with him again, and I am so inspired to make my own handles out of bamboo from my yard, grape vines, and more!
this teapot is hand-formed on the pottery wheel before adding the handle and spout. Once the piece is completely formed, the drawing is applied using an inlay technique. The color is then added and afterwards the glaze is applied to the inside and to the image. Bare clay is left in the negative space which gives it a lovely tactile quality.
